Cumbria and the Lake District have some fantastic cycling. (We know. We live here.) Here are some cycle maps and guide books that will help you make the most of the area.

LOCAL MAPS & GUIDE BOOKSThe "Lake District Goldeneye Cycling Map" shows bike routes from Keswick, Cockermouth, Ambleside, Windermere, Ulverston, Egremont, Kendal, Grange-Over-Sands, Whitehaven and other towns in Cumbria, as well as routes alongside Derwentwater, Ullswater, Coniston Water, and Wastwater.
The Ordnance Survey "Tour Map of the Lake District and Cumbria" is one large map of the whole county, marking long-distance cycle routes. It stretches from Carlisle in the north (and over the border to Gretna) to Kendal and Barrow in the south, and even down to Lancaster; from Ravenglas, Workington and Whitehaven in West Cumbria to Kirkby Stephen, Alston, Penrith and Appleby in Westmorland in the east.

The AA's guide book "Cycling in the North of England" includes 3 routes in Cumbria from Carlisle, Whitehaven and Kendal.
The AA's box-set of route cards "Lake District and the North West, 25 Cycle Rides" has cards for 15 routes in Cumbria including Keswick, Cockermouth, Windermere, Wastwater and Loweswater.

Cyclecity's "Cycle Tours in and around the Lake District" has written descriptions and OS maps for routes from Keswick, Cockermouth, Bassenthwaite, Appleby, Caldbeck, Buttermere, Coniston, Kendal, Ulverston, Kirkby Stephen, Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh.
Vertebrate's "Cycling in the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales: Off-Road Trails and Quiet Lanes" has twenty cycle routes in the south east of the Lake District based on Ambleside, Windermere, Kendal, Appleby and Kirkby Lonsdale, and then routes in the Dales - Settle, Clapham, Casterton. (Note - no routes in north or west Lake District). |

MOUNTAIN BIKE GUIDE BOOKS AND MAPS
The "Goldeneye Mountain Bike Routes Map" with maps for ten off-road routes: Skiddaw Round; Around Blencathra; The Keswick Railway Path; Threlkeld, Troutbeck & The Old Coach Road; Loweswater Circuit & Buttermere Circuit; Watendlath-Honister Circuit; Pooley Bridge-Askham Fell; Eskdale; Coniston-Walna Scar Road-Broughton Moor (& Banishead Quarries-Torver); Windermere-Kentmere & The Garburn Pass.
Vertebrate's "Lake District Mountain Biking" has 27 routes (Classics, Epics, Enduros and Killers!), including routes from Keswick (eg Borrowdale and Skiddaw), Glenridding (including Helvellyn), Ambleside, Coniston, Grizdale and Staveley.

Cicerone's new "Mountain Biking in the Lake District" has loads of routes in the southern and eastern hills of the Lake District, from Staveley, Kendal, Windermere, Coniston, Ravenglas, Kentmere, Haweswater and Pooley Bridge; just one or two in the north and west: Borrowdale and Cleator Moor.

Bike Ride Blog: March 20th 2011: Lake District CyclingQuite a cycling adventure yesterday. With a good forecast and a promise of a lift to Ambleside, Richard and I set off to attempt to climb over the two passes that would take us to West Cumbria: the steep and high Wrynose and Hardknott Passes.
