Jan 27th 2012: Bike books as presentsJan 27th 2012: Bike books as presents

I suppose it’s a bit odd to suggest bike books for presents on 27th January. But hey, the vast majority of us have birthdays this year. And those of you who are married might possibly have an anniversary.

So here goes: what would be good presents to give for a cyclist who has not-quite-everything?

May 16th 2011: Cycle Touring in France

We're just getting ready to take my son to Poole for a ferry and the start of his cycle adventure in France. So I thought we might share what we have learned (so far) about maps and guide books.

He plans to cycle south from Cherbourg, down through Normandy, and on down the south west coast of France to the western edge of the Pyrenees. From there, he plans to ride the Raid Pyrenéen through the high passes of the Pyrenees (including the cols of the Tour de France). Then a train to Nice, and the Grande Route des Alpes.

May 4th 2011: National Byway cycle routes

I’ve been asked about cycle routes that take in places of interest, and there is a set of maps, and signposted routes on the ground which isn’t well known enough: the National Byway network.

April 27th 2011: Lake District Cycling 3

Another lovely ride in the Lake District sunshine (yes, it does happen).

Out to Bassenthwaite Lake and a stop for the view across the lake to Skiddaw.

April 24th 2011: Coast and Castles Cycle Route

There’s a new edition of the Coast and Castles (South) Cycle Route map. It’s a fantastic cycle route, running from Tyneside to Edinburgh, via Berwick-upon-Tweed at the England/Scotland border.

I’ve cycled south from Edinburgh to Berwick and north up the Northumbrian coast from Alnmouth to Berwick, enjoying both rides hugely...

April 22nd 2011: Lake District Cycling 2

It was Good Friday, sunny and warm, with enough gardening done to stem any feelings of guilt.

Primroses, wood anemonies and dandelions lined the hedgerows as I rode south down the lovely Lorton valley...

April 8th 2011: Done the C2C? What to do next?

The C2C (Sea to Sea) is of course the classic coast to coast cycle route. Challenging hills, wonderful scenery. Thousands do it every year, with good reason.

But if you have already done it, what could be your next challenge?

March 20th 2011: Lake District Cycling

Quite a cycling adventure yesterday. With a good forecast and a promise of a lift to Ambleside, Richard and I set off to attempt to climb over the two passes that would take us to West Cumbria: the steep and high Wrynose and Hardknott Passes.

March 10th 2011: New Zealand Cycling

Gap years are a great idea. It’s my ambition to have one.

So in the absence of my own, I gate-crashed part of my son Richard’s. Well, he had told me that he planned on a cycle tour of New Zealand, and how could I resist that?

March 6th 2011: The Bad Influence

I'm not an ultra-fit cyclist, nor a beginner; somewhere in the middle. So winter cycling is normally a little infrequent, with other things taking the time away - a football match on the TV, a little light browsing of the internet, or just warmer temperatures inside than outside. What I really need is something to make me go out, and that something has come along this year. My son Richard is having a gap year. In November I joined him for some cycling in New Zealand, and he is planning a cycle ride through France in the summer. I can't let him train for France entirely by himself, so that's why I'm cycling more this winter than other years. Mind you, I may be a bad influence...
