Old railway tracks and canal towpaths across Brittany: a guide for cyclists and walkers.

The major green ways covered in detail are:

• V2 St-Malo to Rennes

• V3 St-Malo to Questembert

• V6 Carhaix to St-Méen-le-Grand

• V7 Roscoff to Concarneau

A summary is included of the many other green ways that exist in various parts of Brittany.

Background In the first half of the 20th century Brittany’s transport needs were served by a network of railways, largely narrow or metre gauge and a system of waterways. All were major engineering achievements in their time but destined to fall into disuse in the face of competition from the improving road system. Overlooked and neglected for decades, these ready made but outmoded arterial routes have recently been revived as a major leisure resource free from motorised traffic. Railway trackbeds have been cleared and resurfaced, canal towpaths have been renovated and road crossing points made safe. Additional facilities geared to the needs of cyclists and walkers are dotted along the way. The work of improvement is on-going as there are hundreds of kilometres of these routes to be brought back into use.

This guide maps out the major part of the currently accessible network of green ways, shows how it integrates with the roads, logs the facilities in place and the liaisons with other leisure circuits for walkers and cyclists, and provides a directory of overnight accommodation for those who wish to plan a journey of several days or weeks along these ‘quiet’ roads of Brittany.

Often passing through deep countryside, the green ways (voies vertes in French) are an ideal way to discover Brittany and some of its treasures that would not normally be found by the motorised and road-bound tourist. Sites of interest are noted and located on the maps or mentioned as features of detours, diversions or circuits based on the green ways.
